Republicans secure House majority, solidifying broad control in Washington.

Republicans won control of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, according to an Associated Press projection, marking a significant shift in Washington’s power dynamics. This victory grants the Republican Party control of the presidency, Senate, and House, forming a strong governing trifecta. President-elect Donald Trump, alongside close ally Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana), has promised transformative changes across federal government operations, impacting both domestic and foreign policy.

“This will be an era of America First,” Johnson declared, pointing to the Capitol dome during a press conference earlier in the week.

The tipping point came as Republican Rep. Republican Juan Ciscomani defeated Democrat Kirsten Engel in Arizona’s 6th Congressional District, securing the GOP majority in the House.. With this shift, the party has yet to release a comprehensive agenda but has emphasized priority issues: securing the U.S. border and reauthorizing Trump’s 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act in collaboration with the Senate.

Johnson has stated that the party’s mandate is clear—to enact Trump’s policies with vigor, such as reducing environmental regulations and pushing back against what he called “woke culture and radical Johnson aims to address “gender ideologies,” yet he faces challenges within his own party.. The Republicans are entering the 119th Congress with a narrow majority, meaning Johnson will need to skillfully balance Trump’s ambitious plans with moderates’ concerns and conservative hard-liners’ demands for even stricter policies.

In recent developments, Trump has reduced the GOP majority even further by nominating prominent House members to join his Cabinet. Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-New York) is set to become U.N. Ambassador, and Rep. Michael Waltz (R-Florida) will step in as National Security Adviser. In a notable announcement, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) resigned to become Trump’s Attorney General. Johnson reassured reporters that Trump is fully aware of the “numbers” and does not anticipate further resignations.

The Republicans were able to flip several districts across Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Colorado, a shift largely attributed to Trump’s ability to mobilize loyal voters who had previously sat out the 2022 midterms. However, not all victories were straightforward. In New York, Democrats managed to hold onto three seats, led in part by Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ coordinated campaign. Another seat was lost in California.

The Republican victory defied expectations. Leading up to Election Day, the Democrats seemed poised for success, as recent years of Republican control have been marked by internal challenges, including the unprecedented ousting of a House Speaker. But voters remain deeply concerned about inflation, public safety, and immigration—areas where Republicans have gained substantial trust among voters.

Republicans have solidified support among working-class voters and Latinos, groups that were once loyal to the Democrats. As one House Republican put it, “No one expected these numbers.”

On the Democratic side, the mood has been one of disbelief. Democrats were confident about retaining the House, having outperformed expectations in several Trump-leaning districts. During a recent caucus call, members voiced disappointment over losing control but recognized that many of their incumbents had performed strongly, even in challenging districts.

In his statement, Jeffries acknowledged the hard fight, stating, “House Democrats gave it our all.” Although the Republicans narrowly gained control, Jeffries emphasized that Democrats had succeeded in keeping the GOP’s majority “razor-thin”—a significant outcome for what was anticipated as a GOP-dominant election.

This new political landscape sets the stage for an active and contentious term in Congress, as Republicans prepare to drive forward their policy priorities under Trump’s leadership.
